P.A.V.E. Program

Poultry and Animal Virus Education

As the population of the world increases, the global consumption of poultry is increasing resulting a greater need for individuals interested in the industry. Early exposure to animal health and the poultry industry can help bridge this gap in the workforce by encouraging student interest in animal and poultry sciences. Through the completion of the PAVE Program, students will gain knowledge about animal health and disease protection and explore poultry related opportunities including careers. The PAVE program is a series of 5 modules that explore a variety of animal health topics in the context of the poultry industry. These modules are designed to engage and inspire students through a variety of interactive activities focused on increasing agricultural literacy as well as empowering students to make decisions and apply their knowledge to real world scenarios. To maximize their utility as resources to educators, all PAVE Program materials are FREE and are designed to align with 4th and 5th grade Indiana, Michigan and National learning standards.

Module 1: Introduction to Animal Health

Module 1: Introduction to Animal Health

In the first module, students explore what it means to have a sick or healthy animal. Students will make connections between their personal experiences being sick and relate it to how an animal might look or act if they were sick. Activities in this module include videos, drag and drop activities, sorting of animals by their health based on appearance, and interactive questions.

Module 2: Production - Farm to Fork

Module 2: Production - Farm to Fork

The second module focuses on the concept of biosecurity, and how to keep animals and people safe from diseases. Students will relate specific protocols -such as handwashing- to common health risks that it prevents. Activities in this module include videos, drag and drop, and a simulation game where students make choices about biosecurity protocols on their own farm and see how well their decisions protect their animals.

Module 3: Introduction to Animal Immunity

Module 3: Introduction to Animal Immunity

In module three, students begin to learn how animals fight diseases, and will explore different categories of immunity. Students will then learn about specific cell functions by following along to medieval references. For example, a macrophage is like a dragon – not only does it engulf any invaders, but it releases a roar (cytokines) to let others know to be on the lookout for the enemy. Activities in this module include sorting, drag and drop activities, storytelling, and various clicking actions to discover more information.

Module 4: Introduction to Vaccinations

Module 4: Introduction to Vaccinations

In module four, students explore what vaccines are and why they are useful, learn about herd immunity, various vaccine technology, and apply their knowledge by making their own decisions about vaccines on a farm. Activities in this module include drag and drop activites, sorting of animals, answering questions, as well as a simulation game where students will make a series of decisions in a real-world scenario to apply their learning about vaccines, vaccination methods, and common ways vaccines can fail.

Module 5: Introduction to the Poultry Industry

Module 5: Introduction to the Poultry Industry

In the final module of the series, students will explore the common sectors of the poultry industry including laying hens, broilers, turkey, and duck production. They will discuss the top producing areas in the United States, and what they are known for, as well as watch videos describing jobs related to the poultry industry. Activities in this module include videos, drag and drop activities, as well as various clicking actions to discover more information.
